Material parameter optimization for orthogonal cutting simulations of AISI4140 at various tempering conditions

Abstract The mechanical parameters of quenched and tempered AISI4140 the machining process characteristics are depending on material’s tempering state. practical relevance not only cutting forces tool wear, but also surface layer states machined part. In order to predict improve these efficiently, chip forming simulation via finite element method (FEM) is commonly applied. However, an issue in which often addressed choosing appropriate material for flow stress model. This especially accounts with various conditions, as many cases precise heat treatment supplied detail, even scientific literature. this work, orthogonal temperatures 300°C, 450°C 600°C investigated by experiments FE simulations. Johnson-Cook model used simulation. referring conditions iteratively adapted numerical optimization fit experimental forces. obtained compared literature values prepare a common ground AISI4140. contributes enhanced modelling when use-case treatments.
